There is little doubt that the Standard American Diet (SAD) is responsible for a host of degenerative illnesses not only due to the additives and the over processing but also due to the missing essential nutrients that used to be in our foods but have long been stripped out due to soil depletion and over processing.
One of the biggest myths on the internet is that our unhealthy diet causes a candida overgrowth. This is why many sites advise going on the so-called “candida diet”, which is not only extremely unhealthy but will NOT eliminate a systemic candida problem. If the SAD caused a candida overgrowth then everyone in America would have this problem and they certainly do not.
Following the candida diet often brings about a lessening of the symptoms but once the person goes off the strict unhealthy diet for even a few days their symptoms all come back with a vengeance. The reason why these strict dietary changes reduce the severity of the symptoms is due to our immune system. If your candida has become systemic then your immune system is constantly on alert dealing with that situation. Over time it can exhaust immune function. A diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugars also suppresses immune function and the combination of the two can make the symptoms seem worse. Eliminating these foods will help your immune system and as such it will better be able to manage the yeast overgrowth.
We recommend that people avoid concentrated sugars and refined carbohydrates because it will make them feel better while we are working to eliminate the problem, but the strict candida diets are unnecessary an ultimately ineffective. Avoiding fermented foods and yeast containing foods for example because they “feed” the candida is nonsense!
